Chester, CT 06438 September 24. 2020 Mrs. Amy Boutilier 280 Huyshope Avenue Hartford, CT 06106 Dear Mrs. Boutililer, For my capstone project, I have decided to expand our Tiger Center. I want the middle school to know more and gain more experience with having a tutor. I am the director of the Tiger Center and I have many tutors from each grade to help support me in this experience. What we will be doing is tutoring students and helping them with each subject that SMSA has to offer. We will also support our seniors with their capstone projects to guarantee that each senior at SMSA passes with flying colors. The Tiger Center will be online for the first semester of the school year. Due to COVID-19, the Tiger Center will run through google meets Monday - Friday. The google meets will take place during Advisory or after school ends depending on the students preference and availability. I will also be promoting the Tiger Center through Tiger Talk, the morning announcements and emailing teachers each month to remind them that the Tiger Center is open to help each student at SMSA. I have been a tutor at SMSA for three years now. Not only have I worked on my public speaking, but I have gotten an opportunity to help my classmates/students who need it. One thing I want to accomplish this year is helping as much as I can. This is something that I am incredibly passionate about and dedicated to in my senior year. My research question for this project is: Why do students struggle with the writing process? I believe this question is something that everyone is very curious about. Students in school struggle with the writing process a lot and there are certain factors that come into play such as background, SAT scores and if students receive tutoring. The artifacts I will collect over the course of this project are pictures, lesson plans, and videos throughout the whole school year. I am in charge of recruiting tutors and matching students with a tutor so I will have charts of who is being tutored on each day in a google calendar. My mentor is one of the amazing teachers at SMSA, Kimberly Svoboda. You can reach Mrs. Svoboda by her email [email protected] We will work closely to try to improve the Tiger Center and find techniques that work best with this experience. I also will be working closely with the UCONN writing center so I can learn and grow as a tutor. My stretch for this project will be time management. There is a lot to do in a short amount of time so being on schedule with everything is key towards this being successful. Another stretch will be organization because I will be in charge of finding tutors for everyone. Sincerely, Destiny Hurst |
